Joanne Shih (they/them)

Non-linear dance of untangling from judgment to moving with curiosity
where are you turning for soul nourishment / joy / aliveness?
Dancing to music I love. Creating containers of space and time with friends, in which we feel encouraged and inspired to move, play, and express ourselves in front of each other.
what is a text you hold sacred?
This is difficult to answer! Today I am holding this – the first and only email I ever received from my mom (context: I had just taught her how to send an email). She passed away less than a year later in 2008. I feel grateful to have this piece of writing from her, and that she chose to say meaningful things in it rather than something like, “Hello, this is a test email.”
what is a spiritual practice currently sustaining you?
Pulling tarot and oracle cards as a way to converse with the divine. Taking walks and witnessing the trees and flowers in various stages of life.
how would you describe the work you feel called to do in this world (even if it is not the work you get paid for)?
Noticing and delighting in beauty, expressing my experiences and observations via art, facilitating play and curiosity, loving myself more wholly
knowing that none of us “has it all together,” what is one question you are wrestling with, or bit of wisdom you are struggling to enflesh in your daily life?
How can I build trust with myself today?
who is one elder / ancestor / mentor whose guidance you draw from? what is one piece of wisdom they have offered?
adrienne maree brown. Lately I have been sitting with this: “you are not in control, you are in collaboration.” (from “one liners for the full moon” from Fables and Spells)
what’s one oppressive untruth you are practicing unlearning / divesting from?
That my worth is tied to my “goodness,’ to my willingness to self-sacrifice, to what I produce.
what is one thing you wish were required listening / viewing? (please link to the song, poem, art piece, podcast, etc.)
I recommend the song, “Know That You Are Loved,” by Cleo Sol – a song shared first with me by my friend Ryookyung Kim (a previous guest on this interview series!). I have turned to it often since then.
