An Interview with Ryookyung Kim (they/them)

share your spiritual biography in 10 words, or less:

artist & creative, shapeshifter, and alchemist.

where are you turning for soul nourishment / joy / aliveness?

the trees, waterfalls, riverbeds, and creeks; the sun. the rain and thunderstorms. human beings. being in conversation and kinship, together.

what is a text you hold sacred?

there are so many texts i hold sacred! one that i am currently sitting with (and i suspect will be sitting with for many years to come) is Medicine Stories: Essays for Radicals by Aurora Levins Morales.

what is a spiritual practice currently sustaining you?

the art and practice of loving well. saying hello to plants, trees, animals, water (and on and on) and bringing offerings to places i go. breathing deeply. expanding my capacity to be with grief, hurt, and pain.

how would you describe the work you feel called to do in this world (even if it is not the work you get paid for)?

creation; deep dives; making connections and nurturing relationships; coming together in community; alchemy; shapeshifting; illuminating.

knowing that none of us “has it all together,” what is one question you are wrestling with, or bit of wisdom you are struggling to enflesh in your daily life?

i matter. i belong.

who is one elder / ancestor / mentor whose guidance you draw from? what is one piece of wisdom they have offered?

Two elders / mentors come to mind: Joy KMT (there are so many crystals of wisdom they offer, simply by being her divine self and James-Olivia Chu Hillman (who often declares: difference holds possibility). I sit with both of their teachings often.

what’s one oppressive untruth you are practicing unlearning / divesting from?

the illusion of binaries, particularly the trap of being good vs. bad.

what is one thing you wish were required listening / viewing? (please link to the song, poem, art piece, podcast, etc.)

I don’t hope that this is required, but there is a poem I love dearly that I’ve been communing with these days – Wild Geese by Mary Oliver
