in honor of Toni Morrison
Toni told me: “you your own best thing.” and even though she didn’t say it specifically to me she said it to me, to us. And perhaps this small phrase, relatively small on the written page, is a powerful key. A key that unlocks the world of imago dei. A key that reminds us to take one another seriously. A key that unlocks a world where we don’t self-sabotage. A key to a world where people aren’t scrambling over one another, dominating one another…in the quest to be “the best.” Nah Mother Toni told me/we that we are our own best thing.
