Blessing for the Cosmic Whole

Blessing for the Cosmic Whole

May you, in some altered state of sleeplessness or psychedelics or come-to-the-edge coming apart, access a cosmic view of the whole: span of sapiens, a sweep of your broom on the back stoop. Empires rising and falling like breath and your life: a flash of sunlight reflected in a hummingbird's ruby throat. A cicada grows for seventeen years underground so it can sing for two days. The Appalachians were as tall as the Alps before they softened into bosoms. This singular morning, raspberries melt magenta in your oatmeal, honeysuckle hooks to the chain link fence, and you, stubbornly refuse to...

The longest night (for the earth)

The longest night (for the earth)

On this longest night, listen to the wailing of the wild. Hold vigil with the grief of the earth. Remember: from soil humanity was made and to soil humanity will return. Sources of life forgotten and betrayed. Relationship ruptured by violent ideologies. White supremacy’s destruction more reliable than the seasons it disrupts. Power plants grow where poverty does too. Bodies exposed to toxins. Clean air is a luxury. Life choked from water by pipelines and runoff. Consumerism and colonization - kindle for fires of destruction. Slaughterhouses cut off all respect for creaturely life. Corporate...

Remembrance of Baptism (water emphasis)

Remembrance of Baptism (water emphasis)

In a time where there is too much water and not enough water. Tears sting our eyes and our cheeks flare hot with grief when we witness how greed sets the ocean aflame. Billows of smoke are our anger. Crops toasting dry, our heartbreak. Rush of rising water wiping away homes, our weeping. In our grief, here we are: Blood in our veins, riverbeds of our bodies. Air in our lungs, trees inhaling. We tip cups of tea to our lips. We hear the sound of rain and can finally fall asleep. Some lucky days we might float in water with our faces to the sky, or take a hot shower smelling of soap. Can you...

When it’s time to leave

When it’s time to leave

For individuals: Justice entices me. Truth calls for me. I strive to follow where the Spirit leads. When doubt arises, I hold onto these truths.   I have searched my heart in discernment. I have listened for love’s demands. Wisdom has revealed it is a time for parting. No longer can I stay.   I know leaving can be a holy thing. Like an exodus. Or a new seed planted. There is hope in living out my conviction. A release in letting go.   I acknowledge, too, the sorrow present. What was once a place of belonging, now, a home no-longer mine. I feel the loss. I remember the gifts I received. I...

Psalm 4 – remix

Psalm 4 – remix

This piece was originally published on the UCC Worship Ways website. God, The Advocate - Make thy true self known! How long will your name be used to prop up those in power? As they lash out in insecure anguish, feeling their thrones cracking, crumbling, decaying, with scripture they suppress! Through these words of kings past, they hear their own pain, rebuking those who protest their rule. Individualizing struggles, fearing collective power, they encourage us to pray through our problems - alone and in silence. Too many of them say: “Oh that things might never change! May God protect the...
