anointing of the sick

Opening Prayer

Holy Companion,
We join the long lineage of those who have sought your presence in times of pain or illness. In prayer and anointing, we turn to you for comfort, compassion, and assurance of your unending love.
Gathered today, we ask your presence to be near to our sibling, ___. We pray with confidence, for you have been faithful age after age.

Merciful God,
Your love reconciles all things.
Your love makes all things new.
Your love abandons no one.
In acknowledgment of the harm we do to others.
In confession of regrets and sorrows in life.
In search of transformation,
we pray your grace would accompany us
and your forgiveness embrace us,
that peace may be our friend.
In the name of the Parent, the Child and the Spirit,
May it be so.

LITURGY OF ANOINTING

The chaplain anoints the forehead, saying

Through this holy anointing
may you know that God is with you –
that Love remains near through all things.

The chaplain anoints the hands, saying:

May the God of freedom grant you peace and ease of spirit.
May your soul find rest in the company of Love.
Amen.

Additional anointing is offered as requested, including in particular locations of sickness or stress.

The Disciple’s Prayer is shared

A prayer after anointing

Source of All Life,
through this divine touch,
grant ____ the comfort of your closeness.
When fear draws near, support their courage.
When pain is high, nurture their resilience.
When the spirit is low, honor their grief.
When the journey is lonely, be good company, gentle and understanding.
In all things, may they feel your love and know they are held in the care
of the entire cosmos, today and always.
Amen.
