the doula prayer

May every spiral guide us deeper
Into truth, into love, into the dark of a womb
As the ligaments soften
Over months of kicking and swelling
Emerging in life

May our nights bring with them
The waves of laboring
In the warm and fecund waters of community
Light can be distracting, impeding
Forcing names to forms
Triggering old patterns of response
Adrenaline warring with oxytocin
We pray to the Mother of creation
The Moon that embraces the darkness
Of uncertainty, of cycles
Of tides, and of the earth that parts with ease
To allow and encourage and support
New life
