TW: Black Death
Marcellus “Khaliifah” Williams was executed by the state of Missouri a week ago despite evidence pointing to his innocence. It is a searing pain resting upon the hearts of so many (including myself) and this particular newsletter is just a space to lament, witness, and be. There is no way to curate an anti-racist newsletter without recognizing the realities that face so many of us in this country. This is where “listening and learning” seem to be laughable concepts as people struggle for survival. Here in this place…we just are. I have no exquisite words. Neither will I go the route of attempting to justify this man’s life…humans have the right to exist without fear and without execution. Breathe today for all those living. Breathe for all those who were cut off from us. As I struggle to regain my breath and mourn in a way that leads me to my own humanness, I give you a brief set of images to ponder and hold. I wish to live in a society that honors Black humanity and protects us. Love and light to you all.

Robert Monson
co-director
Robert (he/him) is a runner, musician, and a Black theologian committed to softness, contemplation, and liberation for all. As a recent seminary graduate (with distinction) and a current PhD student, Robert studied in-depth the intersection of Black Liberation Theology and womanist theology. Weaving together these two strands of liberation have been important work as well as other liberation based theologies. “How can we help facilitate community and provide answers to a hurting world that is reeling?” remains an important question in his work. While in school, Robert’s scholarly work was recognized and presented at various national conferences/outlets. Podcasting (two shows) and writing remain important aspects of his daily life as well as marathoning the latest Star Trek show(s).
