We are rapidly approaching the end of the year and I know that this time brings a range of emotions as capitalism, grief, and family obligations can weave together in such a way that we are left adrift. I acknowledge that readily and my sincerest desire for you is that you are able to have moments of refuge and joy as we turn the page on another year.
This newsletter was began in the hope and in the belief that we could cultivate a “tough mind and a tender heart” according to the words of Martin Luther King Jr. This is a communal project that is predicated upon questioning ourselves, our spheres of influence, and even society at large. What would it be like if those truly seeking to embody an anti-racist ethic went beyond “listening and learning?” Because. Sometimes. Even after all the listening and learning…people are still hateful. People are still meek when it comes to confronting the interlocking systems of oppression that hinder human flourishing. In that spirit, this particular issue won’t be one that condemns you for all that you haven’t done this year. That type of fear mongering isn’t helpful and doesn’t embody the generative power of truth-telling. So how about we end this year gentle? How about an image, an interview, a poem, another interview, and a resource to carry you into the new year?
