Liturgy that Matters – June 14, 2020 – Matthew 9:35-10:8, (9-23)
Themes: Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves – this is the message of Jesus to his disciples as they are sent to do the work of healing, truth-telling, and community building in the world. They will face persecution for their actions by even those who claim to be friends, to be teachers, or to be leaders. They will need to be prepared for evil’s effort to suppress their work. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed this idea with the call to be “strong-minded and tender-hearted.” We reflect on what this looks like in the world today and how, together, we can ensure the liberatory work of love persists.
