Liturgy that Matters – October 11, 2020 – Matthew 22:1-14
Themes: In this harrowing parable, an egotistical king destroys lives and land after his party’s invitation was denied by the elite class. When the masses are gathered to attend by force and act as if nothing has happened, it is only one man among the many who finds a way to get his message of resistance across. This, Jesus says, is the Kindom of heaven. We talk about the false and untrustworthy promises of privilege, the call to respond in Jesus’ declaration that “many are called and few are chosen,” and the ways in which we may be tempted to settle for survival instead of taking risks for collective flourishing.
