Liturgy that Matters – September 27, 2020 – Philippians 2:1-13

Themes: This week we explore the kenosis or “self-emptying” of God from numerous angles. Thinking along with feminist scholars who push back on patriarchal interpretations of sacrifice that condemn, women in particular but others too, for protecting a sense of self. We also wonder about the differences between the kind of sacrificial love that flows from a strong sense of self and being sacrificed by or for institutions, power, or convenience. Ultimately, the love of Christ is love that leads us into mutuality and reciprocity – between one another and all life forms. How we practice this kind of community in today’s world of competition is the invitation embedded in this ancient text.
