Liturgy that Matters – September 6, 2020 – Matthew 18:15-20
Themes: Conflict in community – how are we to handle it? Historically, the church has a pretty bad track record. When harm is done through racist, sexist, or anti-queer behaviors or beliefs, even among well-meaning communities, too often our strategies for mending and repairing just reflect the patterns of the institutions around us. The powerful are protected. The ones harmed are rushed to forgive. And the collective does little to reflect on the systems and norms that preceded the event. Our text for this week invites us to do things differently – to pay attention to power dynamics, to abolish the “police in our minds,” and to work towards healing and transformation through a just approach to love and scripture.
